Day
1
Arrive Ulaanbaatar – sightseeing & shopping –
dinner
Today you will arrive in the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar.
This city, once the Buddhist and spiritual heartland of the
nomadic peoples of Mongolia, is now a thriving commercial
and industrial centre. The monasteries still remain, even
after the communist purges, yet they now rest alongside Internet
cafes, nightclubs and streets teeming with rush hour traffic.
However, Ulaanbaatar is still a capital where a grazing cow,
a traditionally dressed nomad or a truck loaded with produce
from the country can be found. It is amongst these fascinating
juxtapositions that our journey begins. After arriving in
Ulaanbaatar, you will be met at the airport and transferred
to a 3-star hotel. After a light lunch in the hotel, there
will be a program of sightseeing in the afternoon. This will
include visits to the Bogd Khaan Palace, which is a series of beautiful
traditional buildings, where the last religious King of Mongolia
resided. We will have dinner at a local restaurant and return
to the hotel for a well-earned rest.
Day
2
You are transferred to the airport for the morning or afternoon
flight to Choibalsan, Dornod. The time depends on the domestic
flight schedule. On arrival, you will be met and driven about
55 km to Galyn River, which flows into Lake Yakhi , one of
the bigger lakes of this region. Lake Yakhi was dry in 2004,
due to drought conditions, but is still a good place to see
Steppe Eagles, Golden Eagles, Upland Buzzards, other raptors
and Mongolian Gazelles. Dinner and camp overnight in tents
at the bank of the river.

3
Late in the morning, we will drive towards Lake Yakhi , which
covers an area of 8,400 hectares. The Yakhi Nuur Natural Reserve
provides calving grounds for Mongolian Gazelle as well as
important stopover points for a number of migratory birds.
We will camp (using tents) overnight in Dashbalbar
Soum. We will visit the local museum and will have a chance
to see a performance by the minority group of “Buriad
Zon” There is also an “information centre”
where you can get to know more about this region.

4-5
Drive to Il Turuut via Lake Chukh . At Lake Chukh , you will
be able to watch various water birds. Il Turuut, a hill on
the bank of Ulz River, is the beginning of Mongol Daguur SPA
and also the primary point for watching White-naped Cranes
and other water and shore birds. The Ulz River valley and
connected lakes can be widely viewed from the top of this
hill.

6 - 7
Today, we will drive to Lake Galuut, via a place called
Khadan Khoshuu. In 2004, some bird watchers spotted a Hooded
Crane at this lake. There are many other species that can
be observed here. Here you will have an opportunity to ride
horses and visit nomadic families.
Day
8 - 9
Today, late in the afternoon we drive to Lake Tari. This is
the biggest lake in this region, located on the Mongolian-Russian
border. Researchers have proven that Lake Tari is one of a
few key breeding habitats for the Relict Gull in the world.
Other unique species present are the White-naped Crane, Swan
Geese, Little Curlew, Madagascar Curlew, White Spoonbill,
and the Great Cormorant. Some species, like the Caspian Tern,
utilize this area in huge colonies.

10
We drive towards Delger Bulag (spring in Mongolian) and Lake Shar
Burdiin, Delger Spring and its surrounding area. Lake
Shar Burdiin is another good habitat for birds. In the
summer of 2004, a pair of Japanese or Red-crowned Cranes were
recorded by Mongolian and Swedish bird watchers. The White-naped
Crane and other crane species are more likely to be seen in
this area.

11 – 12
Today we will reach the lowest point in Mongolia, Lake Khokh
(560 m a.s.l). Lake Khokh is a freshwater lake and is rich in
fish resources. A small island in this lake is a great habitat
for gulls. Bird watchers have counted over 3,000 gull nests
on this island. The Relict Gull has been recorded in this
area, while the Herring Gull (also known as Mongolian Gull)
is found in huge colonies. On the way to Lake Khokh, we will
visit Lake Doroo, which is also an important habitat for birds.
We will stay overnight at Lake Khokh.

13
Today we will drive to the Kherlen River via the Chinggisin Dalan
or Chinggis Wall where Chinggis Khaan, the great king of the
Mongol Empire, had an overnight camp, according to legend.
We will have sometime to observe birds in this river side.
Day
14
We will drive into Choibalsan and take the local flight back
to Ulaanbaatar. On arrival we will be met and you will be
transferred to your hotel for dinner and the night.

15 Sightseeing & shopping in Ulaanbaatar –
evening cultural program
We have a full day of sightseeing in the city, including visits to Gandan
Monastery and the the National History Museum. After lunch at
the hotel, we will visit the Fine Arts Museum and have some
time for art and cashmere shopping. The evening program will
include a folklore show followed by a farewell dinner at a
local restaurant. Overnight will be at a 3-star hotel.
Day
16 Departure
After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for
your international departure.
Prices
include the following: Domestic flights, Transportation
within Mongolia, twin accommodation in a 3-star hotel. Single
accommodation can be arranged at an additional cost. Camping
in tents while on trek, three meals a day, English-speaking
guide, all sightseeing costs, transfers, camel or horse hires
where specified, support staff including drivers, horse (camel)
men and camp assistants.
Prices
do not include:
International transportation, travel insurance, visas, departure
tax, alcoholic drinks, gratuities, items of a personal nature.
It
is the responsibility of the client to be fully covered with
travel and medical insurance while traveling in Mongolia.
Please
note:
An additional ‘single supplement’ price is given
with all our prices. This refers to single room accommodation
in hotels only. Upon request, single supplement in the countryside
can be provided at the additional cost. In case single accommodation
in ger camps was not provided the amount would be calculated
based on the missing nights and reimbursed.
Nomads
cannot be held responsible for over bookings, as long as the
company can prove with sufficient documentation that overbooking
has been the error of the third party.
Should
circumstances beyond our control, such as the imposition of
quarantine restrictions, any changes of domestic flight or
train schedules, require a change of itinerary, we will inform
your agent and propose an equivalent itinerary. Again, Nomads
cannot take over the responsibility for the Airlines or the
National Train Company. The traveler is responsible for having
proper travel documents, such as a valid passport, proper
visa and the necessary passport pictures.
