Explore
Mongolia’s modern capital, Ulaanbaatar. Trek through
the stunning Baga Khentii Mountain range where Chinggis Khaan
grew up. Camp amidst mountains, trees, flowers and abundant
wildlife. Return to Ulaanbaatar for a well-deserved reflexology
foot massage!
Chinggis Khaan,
one of the greatest leaders the world has ever known, spent
much of his youth in the forested foothills of the Khentii
Mountains. Chinggis Khaan had his humble beginnings as a small
boy called Temuujin, living on the banks of the Onon River
in the area of present day Khentii province. Temuujin spent
his days in Khentii herding, riding, and looking after his
family. He worshipped Tenger, the blue sky and ruler of heaven.
Today Chinggis is known as the unifier of the tribes of Mongolia
and hero of the Mongolian people. Myths about the great man
are plentiful amongst the local people.
This journey
takes us deep into the valleys, hills and meadows of what
is known as the Baga Khentii Mountain Range – Baga meaning
small, as this range is the smaller sister of the mightier
range of Khentii Mountains found further to the north. The
trek will be within the boundaries of the Gorkhi Terelj National
Park. This Park encompasses some of the most spectacular mountains
in Mongolia, with a landscape of pine and birch and a proliferation
of wildflowers in the summer months. In autumn the trees produce
an amazing display of coloured leaves. On this journey we will
also visit the Gunjiin Monastery, an ancient monastery left
largely in ruins, yet retaining its own unique charm and mystery.

Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and transfer to a 3 star hotel. After
lunch at a local restaurant we will spend some time sightseeing
in the capital, including the Bogd Khaan Palace, which is a
series of beautiful traditional buildings in which the last
religious King of Mongolia resided. It is now a museum displaying
fascinating artifacts and costumes associated with the King,
as well as his collection of European furniture and stuffed
animals. Dinner will be at a local restaurant, followed by
an overnight stay at the Chinggis Khaan Hotel.
Day
2 Terelj National Park
After breakfast at the hotel we will depart in our expedition
vehicles for the Khentii Mountains. The drive will take us
into the Gorkhi Terelj National Park and past the small township
of Terelj. We will cross the Terelj River and camp overnight
on its banks.
Day
3-6 4 days hiking the mountains of the Khentii range
Today we will begin our linear hike along the banks of the
Terelj River. Each day we will hike about 15 km. A yak cart
will carry all camping equipment and kitchen supplies. There
will also be two yak carts available for those who wish to
just sit and watch the scenery or have a short break from
hiking. The scenery is picturesque: the valleys are carpeted
with a huge range of different wildflowers; the meadows are
green; and there is an abundance of bird life. Our final destination
is the mountain known as Altan Olgii, the second highest mountain
in the Khentii Mountain Range. We will set up a base camp
for the next 3 nights on top of Zuugiin Tsagaan Khotol mountain
ridge.
(Note: Day 3 15km
Hike along Terelj River and turn right into the valley of
the Khurkhree River.
Day 4 15km Hike to Mount Ereenii Saridag.
Day 5 26km Hike to Zuugiin Tsagaan Khutul.

7 Relaxation – optional hike to Mount Ust Oroi
Today we will have a well-earned rest at our base camp after
being on the move for several days. The wildlife in this area
is varied and includes musk deer, moose, brown bear, roe,
and elk. It is also a paradise for bird lovers who may be
lucky enough to spot whopper swans, spoonbills, great white
egrets and numerous raptors. We will lead an optional hike
excursion to Mount Ust Oroi.
Day
8 18km Hike to Gunjin Monastery
Today we will continue hiking over hills until we
reach the ruins of the Gunjiin Monastery. We will have plenty
of time to explore the quaint old Manchurian monastery, which
was named after a Princess. We will camp overnight close the
Monastery.
Day
9 Day free for you to spend as you wish, in Terelj
This will be our final day in the mountains, and can be used
