The Mongolia Wilderness Hike!

Our Mongolia Wilderness Hike is a real challenge – 9 days in Khentiii National Park, hiking through deep forests, camping by stunning lakes, and spotting wild animals.

There is no better way to explore the remote valleys of the Khentiii Mountains, in eastern Mongolia, than on foot via our Mongolia Wilderness Hike. This is the ideal trip for the outdoor nature-lover who wants to hike far away from ‘civilization’ and look for rare and beautiful animals, such as bears, wolves, red deer and moose.

Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

Overland by Jeep to Terelj National Park – Tuul River

Today we will drive to Terelj National Park, a beautiful area of rocks and forested hills, only a short drive out of the city. You will get your first glimpse of the traditional nomadic lifestyle of Mongolian herdsmen with their yaks, sheep and horses. After lunch in a ger camp, we will hike in the steppes in the direction of the Tuul River valley and we will also meet our horsemen. We will camp overnight on the banks of the Tuul River.

Today We Start Our Mongolia Wilderness Hike through Terelj National Park

After breakfast, we will load our packhorses. You will be impressed at the strength of the small but sturdy Mongolian horses. We will hike into the valley along the base of the mountain ranges. As we leave civilization behind, you will hear and see ever more ground squirrels, marmots and birds. After about five-and-a-half hours of hiking, we will set up camp.

Today Our Mongolia Wilderness Hike will Take Us Algon the Tuul and Khongoriin Rivers

Today as we hike along the Tuul River, you will notice how the landscape changes as we go north and hike through silent pine forests where all you will hear is the occasional animal call. Keep your ears open for the sound of woodpeckers and keep your eyes open for golden eagles, soaring far above us hunting for prey. After four hours of hiking, we will arrive at our camping spot, a green and peaceful place where the Tuul and Khongoriin rivers meet.

Our Mongolia Wilderness Hike Deeper Along the Tuul River

Today we hike still further along the open valley along the Tuul River, surrounded on both sides by high, densely forested mountains. We will camp at the junction of two different valleys on the banks of the Tuul River.

Our Mongolia Wilderness Hike Will Take Us Away From Tuul River as We Make our Way Towards Black Lake

Today we leave the Tuul valley and enter an area of tundra, which is the habitat of the moose. You will soon become an expert at ‘moose detection.’ After about two hours of hiking in a typical Siberian landscape, we will climb up the mountain through deep forest where deer, wolves, moose and bears live. Keep your eyes open! At the top of the mountain, we cross the pass and descend to the breathtakingly beautiful Black Lake. We will camp on the yellow sand beach of the lake. On days 7 and 8, we will stay camped by the lake and you can swim or fish in the clear water, hike in the forests or go bird and animal watching.

We’ll have some Mountain Ascent Opportunities along our Mongolia Wilderness Hike

Today we will visit three smaller lakes. Some of you may wish to climb the surrounding mountains to admire the stunning views. We will camp in this area.

Today on Our Mongolia Wilderness Hike We’ll Start Following the Khongoriin River into an Incredible Deep Valley

Today we will follow the Khongoriin River downstream for about five hours and camp near a river crossing. The high mountains and the deep valley make this a wonderful day of hiking.

Our Mongolia Wilderness Hike will Take us to Altan Ulgii Mountain

Today’s hike starts in wide valleys, but after about three hours these give way to large mountain forests of birch, pine and cedar. We will climb up a steep path for about two hours until we come to a high pass close to the Altan Ulgii peak. At an elevation of 2646m, Altan Ulgii (meaning Golden Cradle) is one of the highest peaks in the Khentiii Mountain range. On the other side of the mountain, we will camp near a stream where you can cool off after your strenuous day.

Our Mongolia Wilderness Hike will Now Head Towards Dund Bayan Valley

Today we return to Terelj through the Dund Bayan valley. Our luggage, food and equipment will be loaded onto our packhorses and we will meet up again with our vehicles after about six hours of hiking. This evening we will sleep in a ger camp and you will have the chance to meet and chat with local herdsmen.

We’ll Conclude our Mongolia Wilderness Hike with Horse Riding and the Famed Mongolian BBQ!

The horsemen will invite you for a horse ride through Terelj National Park. We hope this will whet your appetite for the delicious traditional farewell lunch to follow! ‘Khorkhog’ is mutton and large chunks of vegetable cooked in a huge metal pot with hot stones from a flaming fire. You will be intrigued to see what is done to the rocks after the meal is served. After lunch, we leave Terelj and return to Ulaanbaatar and your hotel.
